Asbestosis is a form of pulmonary fibrosis caused by prolonged exposure to and inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers. Asbestosis has also been linked to lung cancer.
When an unprotected worker breathes in asbestos fibers, the fibers are deposited on the surface of the lungs. The body's immune system attempts to destroy these fibers but is unable to, and instead the chemicals that the lung's macrophages release cause damage to the pulmonary tissue often leading to the development of scar tissue. If this fibrosis or scar tissue grows too large, breathing becomes difficult and death may result. The inhalation of asbestos fiber has also been associated with tuberculosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer.
