On December 17, 2004 Pfizer, the maker of Celebrex, announced that Celebrex puts patients at an "increased cardiovascular risk" for heart problems.

Pfizer made the announcement, just three months after drug giant Merck pulled its popular painkiller, Vioxx, from the market due to increased cardiovascular risk.

Celebrex (celecoxib), made by Pfizer, went on the market December 1998. Since then more than 20 million people have used Celebrex.

Doctors prescribe Celebrex primarily for pain relief of osteoarthritis - a degenerative joint disease commonly affecting seniors.

Doctors also use Celebrex to treat adult rheumatoid arthritis and dysmenorrhea - severe menstrual cramps.

Celebrex is in a class of drugs known as the COX-2 inhibitors. A subclass of nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), the COX-2 inhibitors differ from traditional NSAIDs by blocking only the enzyme which causes pain and inflammation. Vioxx and Bextra are the other two most common COX-2 inhibitors.
