Crestor (rosuvastatin calcium), made by AstraZeneca, went on the market August, 2003. Crestor is a cholesterol lowering drug that has been linked to rhabdomyolysis - a rare and painfull muscle condition.
Crestor is in a group of drugs called "statins", used to treat high cholesterol, that work by blocking specifc liver enzymes from making cholesterol. Thus, by blocking these enzymes statins can reduce heart attack risk. Other statins include: Baycol, Lipitor, Pravachol, and Zocor.

Rhabdomyolysis is a painful muscle disease triggered by the release of myoglobin - an iron containing pigment found in the muscle - into the blood stream. In most severe cases it causes kidney damage, kidney failure, and death. Most patients suffering rhabdomyolysis report mucle aches in the lower back and legs.
On June 9, 2004 the FDA issued a Public Health Advisory after receiving reports of rhabdomyolysis in crestor patients.
