Gastric Bypass Surgery Risks and Complications

According to the National Institutes of Health nearly 130 million adults in the U.S. were overweight in 2000, half of which were dangerously obese. Over 300,000 of these adults lose their lives due to their unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles.

With these staggering statistics in mind, millions have sought "miracle solutions," some of which have had disasterous effects such as Fen-Phen and other weight loss drugs. With these nonsurgical attempts failing, over 90,000 people a year have attempted gastric bypass surgery as a solution to obesity.

Unfortunately, gastric bypass surgery is also not a perfect solutions as 1 in every 200 patients die as a result of the surgery and its complications. This is nearly twice the fatality rate of other similarly complex surgeries.

The goal of Gastric Bypass Surgery or Bariatric Surgery is to induce weight loss by limiting the patient's food intake through a reduction in their stomach's size.

The most common procedure for Gastric Bypass Surgery is called "Roux-en-Y," where the majority of the patient's stomach is stapled shut reducing the stomach to the size of a golf ball. This reduced stomach is then directly connected to the small intestine bypassing the stapled part of the stomach.

What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric Bypass - Malpractice

Due to the complexity of the procedure, Gastric Bypass Surgery has significant risks of post-operative complications such as:

  • "dishiscense" - separation of the surgically reattached small intestine
  • infection
  • digestive problems
  • malnutrituion
  • death

Recent legal settlments involving gastric bypass patients include but are not limited to:

  • fatigued surgeons who had performed over 5 surgeries that day
  • failure of the physician to respond immediately to patients complaints which characterized the surgery's complications
  • failure by the physician to properly educate the patient and his family on post-surgery procedures
  • inadequate facilities which did not properly accomodate obese patients
