On March 16, 2001 Guidant suspended production and recalled all the existing inventory of its Ancure Endograft System. The company reported that it had actively concealed device malfunctions and adverse events from the FDA, physicians, and patients.

Guidant Endovascular Solutions then reported to the FDA that an internal audit revealed problems with its manufacturing quality systems, complaint systems, and documentation procedures and training.

The company has since pled guilty to ten felony charges of concealing the failure of over 35% of all the units produced. These failures cost twelve patients their lives and caused fifty-seven more to have emergency surgery in order to save theirs.

Guidant has already been fined $92.4 million for its failure to properly report these device malfunctions.

 

 

 

 

 

 

An endovascular graft (EVG) is a tubular device placed in a blood vessel in order to stregthen it. The endovascular graft is usually delivered to the weakened area through a catheter.

The EVG system is used as an alternative to open surgical repairs of Aortic Abdominal Aneurysms - a balooning of the abdominal section of the aorta which weakens the aorta and can lead to leakage, rupture, serious internal bleeding, and death.
