Over the past four years the FDA has received reports of 11 suicides, 12 attempted suicides, 41 cases of suicidal thoughts, and 144 cases of severe depression from people who were taking Lariam at the time.

Lariam is a drug widely used by military personnel and their families, Peace Corps volunteers, and international traveleres world wide in the prevention of Malaria - a potentially fatal disease often encountered in less developed countries.

After an alarming number of deployed soldiers began committing suicide, concerns about Lariam's psychiatric effects began to surface. It has long been known that Lariam can cause depression, as a 1994 report by drug maker Hoffman La Roche revealed.

In July 2003, after concluding that people who use Lariam are five times more likely to have mental problems and suicidal thoughts than people taking doxycycline - an antibiotic used to prevent malaria - the FDA created the Lariam Medication Guide in an attempt to educate Lariam users on its possible side effects.
