Excessive exposure to highly toxic Lead can cause brain damage; impaired hearing; learning disabilities; deformed or stunted development; or, death. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has set the acceptable level of lead exposure to children at less than 10 micrograms per deciliter of whole blood. In light of this, the CDC recommends children be tested every year or once every six months if they are in a high risk environment.
