Paxil has been linked to severe withdrawl symptoms including extreme depression and suicidal ideation.

 

The FDA warns of possible problems with Paxil when used by children and adolescents. Increased violence, aggression, and suicidal ideation have all been associated with Paxil use amongst young people.

Paxil is an antidepressant prescription drug used in the treatment of depression, anxiety, panic disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitiors (SSRIs). Serotonin is a neurotransmitter (brain chemical signal) that promotes feelings of relaxation and happiness; when serotonin levels are too low, a person can feel extremely sad, tired, and even suicidal. SSRIs like Paxil work by regulating the amount of serotonin in the brain. Paxil, Zoloft, and Prozac are all SSRIs commonly prescribed for depression.

 

In December of 2001, the FDA required Glaxo Smith Kline to add a warning label to the Paxil packaging acknowledging serious withdrawl symptoms associated with stopping use of the drug. In order to reduce the side effects, the FDA has advised physicians to slowly decrease their patients dosage.
