Silicosis

Silicosis is a disabling, nonreversible, often fatal, and completely preventable occupational lung disease caused by the inhalation of crystalline Silica dust. According to the U.S. Department of Labor more than a million workers are exposed to silica dust each year and over 250 of them lose their lives annually to the disease.

What is Silicosis?

When an unprotected worker breathes in crystalline silica dust the dust is deposited on the surface of the lungs. The body's immune system attempts to destroy these dust particles but is unable to, and instead the chemicals that the lung's macrophages release cause damage to the pulmonary tissue often leading to the development of fibrotic nodules and scar tissue. If this fibrosis or scar tissue grows too large, breathing becomes difficult and death may result. Silica inhalation has also been associated with tuberculosis and lung cancer.
