Silicosis is a disabling, nonreversible, often fatal, and completely preventable occupational lung disease caused by the inhalation of crystalline Silica dust. When an unprotected worker breathes in crystalline silica dust the dust is deposited on the surface of the lungs. The body's immune system attempts to destroy these dust particles but is unable to, and instead the chemicals that the lung's macrophages release cause damage to the pulmonary tissue often leading to the development of fibrotic nodules and scar tissue.
