Taxus Coronary Stent
Boston scientific recalls over 3,200 Taxus Coronary Stent Systems after receiving 30 complaints of defective devices which led to 22 serious injuries and one death.

On July 1, 2004 Boston Scientific recalled over 200 Taxus Express 2 Paclitaxel Eluting Coronary Stent Systems after receiving many complaints of the failure of the balloon to deflate, making it difficult to remove the stent delivery system.

Boston Scientific quickly determined that the problem was related to a narrowing in the area where the ballon and the catheter were laser welded. This impeded ballon deflation and removal after the stent was delivered.

Upon internal inventory review, Boston Scientific expanded its recall on July 16th, 2004 to 3,000 more Taxus Express 2 Bare Metal Coronary Stent Systems.

What is the Taxus Coronary Stent System?

The Taxus Express 2 Coronary Stent System consists of a stent - a small device used to prop open clogged arteries - attached to a balloon catheter. The stent is inserted into a blood vessel and moved until it reaches the clogged area. Once, the stent is correctly positioned the balloon inflates and the stent expands, pushing the plaque clogging the artery away. This re-opens the artery and reestablishes normal blood flow. The balloon is then deflated and removed, leaving the stent behind to support the walls of the re-opened section of the artery.

Who is Affected?

Since Boston Scientific first launched the Taxus Coronary Stent System in February 2003, over 445,000 stents have been implanted worldwide. The FDA only approved the device in March of 2004, but at the time of the recall over 220,000 stents had been implanted in more 1,300 hospitals across the U.S.

With each Stent System costing over $3,000, Boston Scientific announced that its worldwide sales of the Taxus Stent System surpassed $207 million in July 2004.
