Zocor (simvastatin) made by pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co., was approved by the FDA in March 2002. Zocor is a cholesterol loweing drug that has been linked to rhabdomyolysis - a rare and painful muscle condition.
Zocor is in a group of drugs called "statins", used to treat high cholesterol, that work by blocking specific liver enzymes, such as HMG-CoA, from making cholesterol. Thus, by blocking these enzymes statins reduce the risk of heart attack. Other statins include: Baycol, Crestor, Lipitor, Pravachol, and Zocor.

Since Baycol, another statin drug , was recalled on Aug. 8, 2001, the safety of all statin drugs has come into question. Although the FDA maintains that Zocor is safe and has fewer side effects than Baycol, it also recognizes that Zocor does pose a certain health risk.
Rhabdomyolysis is a painful muscle disease triggered by the release of myoglobin - an iron containing pigment found in the muscle - into the blood stream. In most severe cases it causes kidney damage, kidney failure, and death. Most patients suffering rhabdomyolysis report mucle aches in the lower back and legs.
On June 9, 2004 the FDA issued a Public Health Advisory after receiving reports of rhabdomyolysis in Zocor patients.
